“Oh Dora, the pastor called and said he had a package for me, would you be kind enough to go over and get it for me? Me and Fanta will be fine. I feel like going out into my garden, the flowers look so beautiful today. Do you mind helping me get out there Fanta?” the older woman said.

Fanta helped the old lady up and slowly walked with her through the house and out into the back yard where they sat in a swing.

Fanta wished she knew something intelligent to say about flowers but she didn’t. Having grown up as an army brat, she never got much chance to stop and smell or learn about the roses as they say. Her father was a Captain in the air force and her family, consisting of herself, her brother and parents, were always on the move.

“This is a beautiful garden.”

“I like my garden because this is the place where I talk to the spirits,” Sister Carrie said.

“Spirits?”

“Oh yeah, lots of them around all the time. I guess since I been in contact with them for so long, I find it difficult to believe that most people don’t talk to them.”

“You mean talk to them like we’re talking now?”

“The spirits, they’ll talk to almost anybody if the person listens, but the trouble is most people can only accept what they have been taught to receive, like a radio that’s tuned to a certain station. If the radio’s not on that station, the person just won’t listen. I guess if I admit it, I probably do have, I guess what some people might call a gift,” Sister Carrie smiled.

“Gift?”

“Yeah, we are all born with a gift of some kind. Lots of people never discover it cause they’re too busy listening to what other people tell them their gift is, rather than looking inside themselves. I guess in my case I didn’t have much choice because it came to me so early in life I just accepted it. Then when other people asked me about it, I just told them what I knew. My mother and father accepted it too, so to me it just seemed normal.”

“What is your particular gift if I may ask?”

“I can...well, know things, see some things.”

“You mean like the future?”

“Sometimes the future, but mostly what people are thinking.”

Fanta smiled. She didn’t know if the old lady was putting her on or not.

“But lots of people have what they call gifts. For example, if you hear a piece of music or see a painting and it touches you, well the person who made it found something inside themselves and in some way knew you had that same something inside you too. So their gift was being able to express it through their art and somehow bring it to touch your emotions and share it. I know it might sound strange but it’s true.”

“I never thought about it before.”

“Ran in my family on my mother’s side. My Aunt had a gift like mine, but she kept it hidden.
